Are you over 70 and searching for a good deal on car hire and trying to avoid senior driving fees that some suppliers often impose?

Car rental suppliers will have age limits. For example, most they only rent out a vehicle if the driver is over 21 and has held a licence for one or two years. When it comes to senior car hire, some supplier will also impose an upper age limit, example age 70. These suppliers will in most cases still rent to drivers over 70, but they may impose an over 70s additional driving fee. An over 70s car hire driving fee is simply an additional daily amount. Some car rental companies claim the extra charges are this is to cover additional risk, but it is an easy way to make more money of older drivers.

The good news is that fewer companies are being restrictive and many will rent to anyone up to age 99 and many will not impose a senior driving fee.

Steps to hiring a car for seniors

The Discover car booking system will automatically default to assuming the driver is aged between 25-65, this is due to the age range If you are over 70 simply untick this box and enter the correct age of the lead driver at date of rental pickup.

The search will return all rental agents who permit over 70 cars hire at your selected location. If there is an extra charge for this, it will be outlined in the T&C’s for that particular car rental supplier and any fee payable at the rental desk.

What is the maximum age limit for renting a car?

This will depend on the actual car rental company that you are looking to hire from. The car rental upper age limit if any does vary can be as low as 65 or 70. Some set the limit as low as 65 or 70
years old, while others allow rentals up to 80 or even 99 years old.

To find the upper age limit if one is being applied, you will need to check the supplier rental terms and conditions.

Can I rent a passenger minivan or a luxury car if I am over 70 years old?

Yes, this isn’t an issue. We have suppliers that offer all car rental categories for drivers up to the age of 99.

Will the car rental supplier offer a discount for car hires for those over 70?

The best way to secure an over-70’s car hire discount is to book early in the season. Discounts for seniors are sometimes available in the low season, so if you can make your booking outside of peak holiday times, for example, autumn instead of the summer months, or spring instead of June, July, or August.

If an over-70’s car hire fee applies, how much will it be?

In the Bosnia Herzegovina, most have maximum age limits of 70 or 75, but Sixt have no upper age limit

Can I rent a car if I am over 70 in the Czech Republic?

In the Czech Republic, most have maximum age limits of 70 or 75, but Carwiz will rent up to age 99.

Can I rent a car if I am over 70 in Italy?

Italy are easy going on upper age limits and many will still rent up to age 80 and some above 80!. We advise bringing a recent medical record along if age 80 or above.
